What Is Toe Shortening Surgery?

Toe shortening is a minimally invasive procedure to shorten an overlong toe (most commonly the second toe), bringing it nearer proximally to the hallux. This is usually necessary in the instance of Morton’s Toe, where the second toe is longer than the first toe. It serves two purposes: pain or pressure relief and to have a more balanced, more aesthetically pleasing foot appearance.

The procedure usually consists of excision of the excess bone and tissue from the offending toe, together with realignment and immobilization (if needed). Depending on the severity, the procedure could be done under local anesthesia, sedation, epidural, or general anesthesia. The majority of surgeries take about three hours read more.
