Why Colon Cancer Is On Rise?

Colon cancer is the uncontrolled growth, proliferation and transformation of cells in the colon tissues, the longest part of the large intestine, into malignant cells. It usually starts with polyps that form in the inner lining of the colon. Colon cancer, a life-threatening disease, is treatable with early diagnosis. This life-threatening disease may occur due to previously diagnosed different cancer conditions, genetic factors, nutrition and lack of adequate monitoring of any suspicious polyp formation. While colon cancer screening is normally recommended for individuals aged 50 and over, it has been observed that the diagnosis of colon cancer in individuals aged 45 and under has increased in the screenings performed as of May 2021. However, according to a study conducted in 2017, it was found that individuals born as Generation Y have twice the risk of colon cancer compared to those born in the 1950s. This research also found that the diagnosis of advanced stage colon cancer is 60% higher than in individuals under the age of 55. For this reason, colon cancer screening has started in individuals aged 45 and under. According to the International Cancer Institute, colon cancer is the third most common cancer worldwide and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths.


Nutrition is one of the most important reasons for the increase in colon cancer.
